Ian ArmstrongBackgroundHighly experienced in the Atlantic salmon industry following his graduation from the University of Edinburgh, Ian worked 12 years as a salmon farmer with Marine Harvest in Scotland and Chile. A Nuffield Scholarship tour to Japan then convinced him to broaden his management experience within the industry.Following 8 years experience working as Processing Manager on the Scottish west coast for Marine Harvest and Scottish Sea Farms (formerly Hydro Seafood GSP) his independent consultancy Nevis Marine Ltd was formed in August 2002. |
Harvesting TechnologyBased on his practical management experience during the 1998 ISA crisis Ian played an integral part in developing the innovative RSW closed valve technology now increasingly being adopted. Market ready salmon are transported by wellboat and chilled to high welfare standards before being percussively harvested in shore side harvesting plants.Mallaig Harvest StationSubsequent to the identification of a suitable location and wellboat in 2002, Nevis Marine worked closely with Marine Harvest to deliver a state of the art Harvesting Station at Mallaig. The success of this project has facilitated the farming of more exposed waters by Marine Harvest whilst also permitting their rationalisation of processing facilities. Fresher higher quality product is now delivered more quickly to their key customers throughout the world.Ultra Fresh FilletsThe quality benefits of this process are profound whilst the environmental benefits are significant and sustainable. This technology provides an ideal platform for our clients to deliver pin bone out pre rigor fillet - ultra fresh. This will become an important commercial benefit within salmon growing areas including for the local communities which support them.SølvtransBuilding on the success of this inaugural project Nevis Marine now have close links with the most innovative Norwegian wellboat company, Sølvtrans AS. Based in Scotland since 1995 their dynamic entrepreneurship has helped ensure the Scottish salmon farming industry is very well positioned to sustainably deliver cost effective premium product into the increasingly challenging European salmon market.New ProjectsWe are always interested in new developments in this young industry and can be readily approached in confidence to discuss any potential new project. Legal confidentiality agreements at an early stage protect both the client and ourselves. |
